Differential repair is precision setup work.
The differential allows the drive wheels to rotate at different speeds while carrying torque through the ring gear, pinion, bearings and carrier. Wear or incorrect setup can create whine, howl, growl, clunking, heat, leaks and eventually loss of drive.
A noise under acceleration can indicate a different contact pattern or bearing load than a noise on coast. Turning noise may involve carrier bearings, limited-slip components, wheel bearings or CV joints. The vehicle must be considered as a complete driveline before gears are condemned.
When gears or bearings are replaced, pinion depth, bearing preload, backlash and tooth contact pattern must be established correctly. Simply installing parts without measuring the setup can create immediate noise and short service life.

What causes a differential to whine?
Possible causes include gear wear, incorrect backlash or pinion depth, bearing damage, low fluid and an existing poor contact pattern. The drive/coast pattern helps narrow it.
Can a wheel bearing sound like a differential?
Yes. Wheel bearings, tires, driveshafts and CV joints can produce speed-related noise that travels through the body and is mistaken for differential noise.
Can you change my gear ratio?
Selected ratio changes may be possible, but front and rear ratios must match on four-wheel-drive vehicles and calibration, carrier compatibility, tire size and intended use must be considered.
Do differential gears require a break-in?
New gear sets commonly require heat-cycle and fluid-service precautions. Follow the specific gear and installer instructions supplied with the completed job.
