Ram 68RFE Transmission

A diesel transmission must be built and calibrated for the load it actually sees.

Integrity offers remanufactured 68RFE replacement packages and selective build direction for supported Ram Cummins applications, including stock, towing and modified-use considerations.

Load SensitiveTowing, tuning, tire size and heat change the requirement.
Overdrive ClutchesCapacity and pressure are important under diesel torque.
Valve BodyCross leaks and pressure control affect clutch life.
CalibrationMechanical upgrades and tuning must work together.

Supported Units

The 68RFE works as a system with the Cummins, truck and calibration.

The 68RFE is used behind the 6.7L Cummins in Ram heavy-duty trucks. Its duty cycle can range from a stock unloaded pickup to a tuned truck moving substantial trailer weight. That difference matters when choosing a converter, clutch capacity, hydraulic strategy and cooling plan.

Common areas of concern include overdrive clutch distress, valve-body cross leaks and bore wear, pump and line-pressure issues, converter clutch failure, accumulator or separator-plate problems, drum and sprag damage and heat-related wear. Continued operation while slipping can rapidly increase the hard-part bill.

A complete reman package can provide defined updates, testing and warranty. A custom rebuild may make sense for selected applications, but power level and towing use must be disclosed honestly so the hardware and calibration are not mismatched.

What Matters

68RFE durability depends on more than clutch count.

Hydraulic integrity, converter control, heat and calibration determine whether added capacity can survive.

01

Overdrive Capacity

Overdrive clutch failure may follow pressure loss, heat, repeated load and calibration. New clutches alone will not correct the cause.

  • Clutch and steel heat
  • Drum and piston sealing
  • Commanded pressure and load
02

Valve Body & Pump

Cross leaks, bore wear, separator-plate damage and pump condition can reduce or misdirect the pressure needed to hold clutches.

  • Line-pressure control
  • Valve and bore wear
  • Filters and fluid supply
03

Converter & Use

Converter clutch capacity, stall behavior, cooling and engine torque management must match towing and power goals.

  • Stock versus tuned torque
  • Trailer weight and terrain
  • Cooling and lockup strategy

A Clear Path

Match the 68RFE package to the truck.

A complete quote requires more than the VIN because use and modifications materially change the build.

STEP 01

Document Truck

Send VIN, mileage, tire size, axle ratio, tuning and engine modifications.

STEP 02

Document Work

Describe trailer weight, frequency, terrain and how the truck is driven.

STEP 03

Review Failure

Provide codes, shift symptoms, heat history, debris and prior repairs.

STEP 04

Select System

Choose the transmission, converter, cooling, calibration and warranty that fit together.

Common Questions

Answers before you schedule.

These answers provide a starting point. The vehicle, evidence, written quote and warranty terms control the final recommendation.

What commonly fails in a 68RFE?

Overdrive clutches, valve-body hydraulic circuits, converter clutch, pump-related components and other internal parts can fail. The pattern often depends on load, heat and pressure control.

Can a stock 68RFE handle towing?

A healthy stock system can handle work within its rating, but trailer weight, terrain, heat, maintenance, tire size and calibration affect durability. Persistent slipping or overheating should not be ignored.

Do I need a billet converter?

Not every truck does. Converter selection should match engine torque, towing, calibration, desired drivability and the rest of the transmission build.

Can tuning cause transmission failure?

Added torque and altered shift or lockup strategy can increase clutch and hard-part load. The transmission build and tune should be selected as one system.

Start With the VIN

Get the correct application before choosing the repair.

Send the VIN, mileage, symptoms, codes, prior repair information and whether the vehicle is drivable. Integrity will review the available path and follow up with the next step.
